Why are emeralds more expensive than diamonds?

The precious stones have captured human fascination throughout history, not only for its beauty but also for its rarity and courage. Among the most coveted gems are diamonds and emeralds. Although diamonds are often considered to be the most expensive gemstone, in some cases emeralds can outperform diamonds in terms of price.

To understand why this happens, it is essential to analyze the prices of both gems, their distinctive characteristics and the reasons behind their differences in value.

Diamond prices

Diamond prices vary significantly depending on several factors, including carat weight, clarity, color and cutting, collectively known as the diamonds' 4C.

In the current market, the average price of an average quality diamond is around $5,000 to $7,000 per carat. However, higher-quality diamonds can reach much higher prices, even surpassing $50,000 per carat for exceptional stones.

Prices of emeralds

On the other hand, emeralds, especially high-quality ones, can be considerably more expensive than diamonds. Emerald prices can vary enormously, but on average, a high-quality emerald can cost between $8,000 and $30,000 per carat.

Exceptional emeralds, with a vibrant color intensity and superior clarity, can reach prices exceeding $100,000 per carat.

Characteristics of diamonds

Diamonds are appreciated for their hardness and brilliance. With a score of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, diamonds are the hardest known natural substance. Its clarity is a critical feature; however, the inclusions and defects in diamonds are more tolerable than in other gems because of its ability to refract light spectacularly. Diamonds are also valued for their purity and color, with colourless or almost colourless diamonds being the most desirable.

Characteristics of emeralds

Emeralds, in contrast, are known for their intense green color and relative fragility. With a toughness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, emeralds are softer than diamonds and therefore more likely to scratch or fracture. The main characteristic that defines the value of an emerald is its color, with the most valuable stones showing a deep and vibrant green. The clarity of emeralds is also important, but the inclusions, known as gardens, are common and acceptable in this gem.

Emerald vs. diamonds: Differences and why emerald can be more expensive

  • Availability and demand: High-quality emeralds are much rarer than high-quality diamonds. While diamonds are in large quantities and produced in a variety of colors and qualities, exceptional emeralds are extremely rare, and finding one with the desired color and clarity can be a significant challenge.
  • Extraction and treatment process: Emeralds often require treatment to improve their clarity, which can increase their cost. In addition, emeralds are in limited deposits, which restricts their availability on the market.
  • The perception of value: Emeralds have been appreciated throughout history in various cultures, and their unique beauty and difficulty finding high quality stones contribute to their high value.
