What Happened to the Colombian Emeralds "Fura" and "Tena"?

If you're a lover of emeralds, you've probably heard of Fura and Tena, two of Colombia's most iconic gemstones. Their names come from a mythical legend about an impossible love between two indigenous lovers whose tears of forbidden love turned into emeralds.

It's a story full of mysticism, but as the years go by, many wonder what their characteristics were and what happened to these famous gems. Let’s discover the answers together in the following article.

What is the Fura Emerald?

The Fura emerald is one of the most famous in the world. Weighing approximately 11,000 carats, it is considered the second-largest rough emerald ever found. Its name comes from Muisca mythology, where Fura was a goddess associated with love and fertility.

What makes Fura special is not just its size but also its quality and color. Although not entirely transparent, its deep green hue makes it a unique and highly coveted piece. This type of emerald originates from the Boyacá region of Colombia, home to some of the world's most valuable gemstones.

Where is the Fura Emerald Today?

After its discovery, Fura became part of private collections and was exhibited at various international events. Its historical and gemological value makes it a jewel that many wish to see, but its exact location is not always disclosed.

Currently, the Fura emerald remains in private hands, although it has occasionally been displayed in museums and gem fairs. Its whereabouts remain a mystery to many, but its legacy endures in the history of Colombian mining.

What is the Tena Emerald?

The Tena emerald is considered the most valuable emerald in the world—not because of its size but due to its dark green color. It was discovered in 1999, along with the largest emerald in the world, Fura, in a mine located in the mountains of Muzo, a municipality in Boyacá, Colombia, well known for its emerald deposits. It is situated 170 km from Tunja, the department’s capital, and 90 km from Chiquinquirá.

Unlike Fura, Tena stands out for its clarity and irregular yet striking shape. Its intense green color and size have made it a treasure for collectors and gemology experts.

Where is the Tena Emerald Today?

Like Fura, the Tena emerald has passed through various private collections and has been exhibited on multiple occasions. However, its current whereabouts remain unknown, and it is unclear in which country or collection it is currently held.

What is certain is that its history and beauty make it an iconic piece in the world of emeralds. Its existence continues to fascinate experts and enthusiasts, who remain eager to admire and study its impressive natural formation.
