When this extraordinary 858-carat gemstone was found, it was common practice to name significant emeralds after the person who discovered them or someone closely associated with their discovery. In this case, the gem was named “La Emilia” as a tribute to the woman responsible for one of the most important emerald discoveries in Colombian history.
